Ayurvedic medicine, or “Ayurveda,” is considered one of the oldest forms of holistic therapy, encompassing a set of practices addressing the health of the entire body.
“Ayurveda” derives from two Sanskrit words: “ayuh,” meaning “life” or “longevity,” and “veda,” meaning “science” or “sacred knowledge.”
Therefore, Ayurveda can be translated as the “science of longevity” or the “sacred knowledge of life.” Its purpose is to promote health improvement and well-being, rather than solely combating diseases.
Practitioners of Ayurveda believe that each person is composed of the five basic elements of the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These combine in the human body to form three vital energy forces, known as doshas, which control all bodily functions and their convergence for the proper functioning of the human body.
– Vata dosha: representative force of space and air
– Pitta dosha: force of fire and water
– Kapha dosha: corresponding force of water and earth
Each person inherits and possesses a unique combination of these vital forces, but usually, one of them manifests more prominently than the others, shaping both the individual’s personality and health status.
Many things can disturb the energy balance, such as stress, unhealthy diet, weather, and strained family relationships; considering these details, Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe treatments to bring the doshas back into balance.
